Contents:-
This presentation provides an overview of The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) and their impact innovating the digital visual effects and animation industry internationally. Software developers from many famous studios includes the Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Pixar, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Weta Digital, Netflix, Unreal Engine etc. have joined ASWF and participated providing such novel Open Source (OS) production workflow.
The second part covers three Hong Kong software developers who indeed contributed to the Hong Kong's original digital ink-painting and animation creations. Audience will be introduced to some of these locally created CGI Ink-wash animation shots.

Part 1 : The Open Source culture in Hollywood initiated by the Academy of Software Foundation (ASWF) & the Motion Picture Industry
1.1). Open Source initiative committed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar) and The Linux Foundation is collaborating with major CGI studios and offer a neutral platform for all stakeholders.
The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) was announced during the SIGGRAPH 2018 about their establishment providing a long-term open source support to the motion picture industry. They provide a core infrastructure for all CGI professionals to adapt OSS for industrial productions. Following listed their key projects:
- OpenColorIO - a colour management solution for CGI production
- OpenEXR - a HDR file format originally developed by ILM
- OpenVDB - a high-resolution volumetric fast data access function originally developed by DreamWorks
- OpenCue - a render management system
- OpenTimelineIO - an interchange format and API for editing media
- Open Shading Language - a PBR shading language originally developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks
- (the latest project joined ASWF) MaterialX - an open standard to transfer rich material and look-development contents originally developed by ILM

- Moxi - an inking simulation engine
- Yibi - a virtual brush engine
- Youji - a high-resolution render engine
Find Find《爪抓》is an indie animation film directed by Angela Wong, applied 'Expresii' in the production
- Produced by Studio Biped
- Developed a "procedural inking" feature for the octopus' motion (click following image to see their FB video)
